“The Winds of Winter” should have been released a few years ago, but up to now, the sixth book in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” novel series has yet to make its way to the bookstores. The fifth story was released in 2011, and since then, fans have been waiting for George RR Martin to make an announcement for the next one.
New promise on publishing the book
Martin said in early 2019 that he would not mention a date anymore because he just tends to break his promise as shown in the multiple delay announcements after dropping a date. However, just a few months after saying this, he once made a promise once again, but this time, GRRM appears to be very confident that perhaps, he is really very close to finishing “The Winds of Winter.” In May of this year, he wrote on his blog entry titled “Thanks, New Zealand” that the much-awaited book is arriving in the summer of 2020.
“As for finishing my book, I fear that New Zealand would distract me entirely too much so it’s best to leave me here in Westeros for once,” the 71-year-old author wrote. “But I tell you this - if I don’t have ‘THE WINDS OF WINTER’ in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for Worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I’m done.”
Can he fulfill his most recent promise?
Some observers have voiced out that George RR Martin is not likely to make his promise good about the summer 2020 release. BryndenBFish, an observer who follows the author, said that there are many signs that say “The Winds of Winter” is really coming next year. However, it will not be on his mentioned month of August or early September.
“All teasing aside, I think 2020 will be the year ‘TWOW’ gets published,” BryndenBFish tweeted on Dec. 27. “I have faith in my sources.”
Then again, when someone asked what he thinks if he thinks GRRM will make it to the Worldcon deadline as mentioned in the blog entry, he simply responded, “no.” Meanwhile, Express organized a poll for the release of “The Winds of Winter,” and it turned out that there are more fans who think that George RR Martin will not make it on his set date of August or September 2020. The result was 42% against 58%, who thinks he will miss the due.
