Top Republicans aligned with Donald Trump are pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to reconsider his stance on the war with Russia or step aside. The tension escalated after Zelenskiy’s contentious White House meeting, where he clashed with Trump and Vice President JD Vance, leading to an early departure without signing a planned minerals deal.

Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, suggested Zelenskiy might not be open to negotiations. Trump’s goal is a permanent peace deal involving territorial concessions and European-led security guarantees. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson echoed this sentiment, stating that Zelenskiy must either realign with U.S. expectations or be replaced.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and others questioned whether Zelenskiy remains a viable partner for the U.S., while some Democrats, including Senator Bernie Sanders, denounced calls for his resignation. Senator Chris Murphy criticized the White House for aligning with Russia, calling the situation “absolutely shameful.”

The White House, however, refuted allegations that the Oval Office meeting was an ambush. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the need for negotiations with Moscow, dismissing confrontational rhetoric toward Russian President Vladimir Putin. Meanwhile, Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar expressed dismay over the Oval Office clash but remained hopeful for a potential peace deal.

The controversy underscores growing divisions in Washington over how to handle the ongoing conflict. While Trump and his allies push for a diplomatic resolution, critics argue that pressuring Ukraine to make concessions could embolden Russia. As global leaders watch closely, the future of U.S.-Ukraine relations remains uncertain.
