U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday signaled support for potential regime change in Iran while confirming that the Pentagon is deploying a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East, escalating tensions even as diplomatic talks with Tehran resume.
Speaking after a military event at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Trump said regime change in Iran “seems like that would be the best thing that could happen,” though he declined to name any preferred successor leadership. His remarks come amid renewed efforts to revive nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
According to a source briefed on the matter, U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are scheduled to hold talks with Iranian representatives in Geneva on Tuesday, with Oman serving as mediator. The envoys are also expected to meet Russian and Ukrainian officials in separate discussions aimed at advancing efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Despite the diplomatic push, Trump reiterated his tough stance on Iran’s nuclear program, ballistic missile development, and regional activities. Washington wants any new nuclear deal to address Iran’s missile capabilities, support for armed groups in the Middle East, and human rights concerns. Tehran has indicated it is willing to negotiate limits on its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief but has rejected linking talks to its missile program.
The U.S. Navy’s USS Gerald R. Ford will join the USS Abraham Lincoln and other military assets already positioned in the region, including guided-missile destroyers, fighter jets, and surveillance aircraft. Trump said the additional carrier would be ready “in case we don’t make a deal.” Officials estimate the Ford will take at least a week to arrive.
The move underscores rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, as the United States strengthens its military presence while pursuing high-stakes nuclear diplomacy with Iran.
