Making AI shopping profitable may depend on platforms earning at several points in a purchase or holding a stronger role in the transaction, while managing the service’s computing demands.
Traditional Search remains ahead of Alphabet’s AI Mode on monetization. Meta has not shown that shopping handled by AI agents produces income through channels beyond advertising.
Because an AI shopping conversation requires more computing than a keyword search, a platform’s profitability also turns on how efficiently it can serve those interactions. Advertising, subscriptions, payments, transaction fees and infrastructure use are among the possible revenue channels. An AI tool may shape a shopper’s choices early on and stay involved as that person makes a purchase.
Shopify’s buyer-controlled checkout path for compatible AI agents lets an agent prepare an order, but the shopper must approve the amount and payment method before it is placed.
The outlook for those monetization gaps and for revenue beyond current sources remains uncertain.
