As part of its efforts to have a piece of every single pie that there is to cut, Amazon has been trying its hand in video game development with a fantasy brawler MOBA title called “Breakaway” for some time now. Considering the fate of other such titles in the highly competitive market, however, it’s no surprise that the developers recently announced its cancellation.
Video game development is a costly process that doesn’t always guarantee solid returns. This is especially true in the case of such a crowded market as MOBAs, with titans like Overwatch and League of Legends vying for everyone’s attention. This is likely why the developers of Breakaway recently had to announce via Reddit post that the game is being canceled, though, they offered other reasons for doing so.
“Since our last announcement, we have worked to implement community feedback and iterate on Breakaway’s core gameplay. While we have developed many ideas and made a lot of progress, we are also setting a very high bar for ourselves. In spite of our efforts, we didn’t achieve the breakthrough that made the game what we all hoped it could be. After a lot of soul searching, the team decided to focus on new ideas. As a result, Breakaway is no longer in active development,” the post reads.
“We remain exceptionally proud of the team’s work, and feel privileged to have been a part of such a dedicated and enthusiastic community. We will reach out to this channel as soon as we have news to share regarding our new projects, and if a thunderbolt of inspiration strikes that leads us back to Breakaway, you’ll be the first to know.”
As Glixel notes, Amazon Game Studios does have other titles in the works, including a sandbox MMO. So far, however, nothing that the studio has worked on has made much of an impact on the industry.
