The second episode of “American Horry Story: Apocalypse” revealed a big twist that got fans, and even the character involved, questioning where the narrative is going. In the first episode, a rule was established by Ms. Wilhemina Venable (Sarah Paulson) that survivors in the fallout shelter are prohibited to fornicate, Inquistr reported.
While those inside the shelter were eager to follow this rule, Timothy (Kyle Allen) and Emily (Ash Santos) decided to go against it. The decision came amidst their discovery that the rule was put in place by Ms. Venable and not by the shadowy organization called The Cooperative. When Ms. Miriam Mead (Kathy Bates) discovered the sexual encounter in “American Horry Story: Apocalypse” Episode 2, she decided to kill the teenagers.
Filled with the need for self-preservation and to protect Emily, Timothy decided to fight for their lives and managed land a blow to a guard inside the decontamination chamber. After successfully stunning the guard, Tim took his gun and fired at Mead, straight at her torso. As Mead staggered out of the room, she checked on her wound to see not blood and flesh but wires and white fluid. This was quite the twist for “American Horry Story: Apocalypse” given that sci-fi isn’t really one of the anthology's themes.
In previous installments, the show’s mysteriousness stemmed from the paranormal and the supernatural. Now, it seems that “American Horry Story: Apocalypse” is injecting a sci-fi flavor into its genre. But apart from this shocking development, what’s even more interesting is Mead’s reaction to her self-discovery.
How was she unaware that she’s a machine? Better yet, who’s responsible for programming her to think that she’s human? The most likely candidate is The Cooperative. But another question pops up: Are the members of the organization themselves robots? Is this why Ms. Venable is against fornication? The plot twist in “American Horry Story: Apocalypse” certainly did put a lot of questions forward.
But it also offers some clarification for this installment’s premise of the world being a victim of a catastrophic nuclear fallout. A robot or a cyborg will certainly not be affected by any radiation caused by the world-ending event. Whatever the case, this plot twist certainly turned the franchise on its head and “American Horry Story: Apocalypse” will shed more light on the story when the third episode airs on Sept. 26.
