Apple plans to unveil significant upgrades to its Siri voice assistant in 2025, with a beta version available in January. Enhancements include a new interface and integration with OpenAI's ChatGPT, offering a more intuitive and capable user experience.
Apple to Introduce AI-Enhanced Siri with iOS 18 Updates, Major Upgrades Coming in 2025
Neowin reported that Apple plans to introduce some of its new Apple Intelligence AI services as part of the iOS 18 updates this autumn. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman's latest Power On weekly newsletter, the Siri voice assistant, initially launched in 2012, will also receive enhancements from Apple Intelligence this autumn. These upgrades include a new interface design and integration with OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot.
However, Gurman reports that the more significant Siri enhancements, set for release in 2025, cause anticipation. Siri will be granted significantly greater direct access to Apple's iOS applications.
These features will significantly enhance the user experience, making Siri more intuitive and capable. For instance, you can ask Siri to edit a photo and then share it with a friend, or it can understand what you’re viewing on your screen, helping it to anticipate your following action based on the context.
Unfortunately, these features will not be available immediately. iOS developers will get access to a beta version of these new features in January 2025. The iOS 18.4 release, expected in the spring of 2025, will include the full public launch.
Amazon Develops Enhanced Alexa with AI LLM, Potential Monthly Fee for Access
Amazon is not the only organization modernizing its voice assistant to accommodate the emerging AI era. It is reportedly developing an enhanced version of its Alexa voice assistant, which was introduced in 2014. In September 2023, Amazon demonstrated its Alexa assistant accessing an AI Large Language Model (LLM), a powerful AI model that can understand and generate human language.
Unconfirmed reports have suggested that Amazon may officially introduce the upgraded Alexa with its AI LLM in September. The company could potentially charge a monthly fee of $5 to $10 to access the AI-based Alexa. No information has been released regarding whether Apple could replicate this approach with an AI-enhanced version of Siri, but it's a potential change that the market should be aware of.
