In case some fans have not heard yet, the premiere of “Avatar 2” was once again delayed. On the bright side, more plot details have been revealed that seem to confirm an earlier leak suggesting what the sequel’s title is going to be.
Director James Cameron has repeatedly talked about the underwater scenes that compose the important parts of “Avatar 2.” In an earlier interview with Collider, Cameron explained all the technical difficulties of filming underwater with a motion capture system.
It was so challenging that their first successful test shot underwater only happened in November 2017. Aside from that, the critically-acclaimed filmmaker also revealed that it took several months for the “Avatar 2” cast to train how to act underwater.
Earlier this year, Stephen Lang and new cast member Kate Winslet were also confirmed to have filmed several scenes underwater for “Avatar 2.” "I've done over four minutes, static hold,” Lang told IGN. “If I get into acting a scene, I'm good for maybe a minute and a half before I start turning as blue as a Na'vi."
As for Winslet, she also needed to learn of static breath hold underwater and did so for about seven minutes in one of her scenes in “Avatar 2.” In a separate interview with Collider, producer Jon Landau confirmed the actress also received training for the highly anticipated film.
The need for actors to learn to hold their breath underwater for several minutes straight seems to suggest that “Avatar 2” is heavily set in a part of Pandora that is below sea level. Fans may recall that BBC previously reported having access to a “documentation” that reveals the second movie would be titled “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
BBC’s information is very likely true. However, it is also not strange for movie productions to make major changes in its title, especially when no official announcements were made yet. There is a big chance of that happening now that “Avatar 2” has once again been delayed for an entire year. The film is now slated to be released on Dec. 17, 2021.
