While rumors have been swirling for months that Bethesda was working on a video game based on the hugely popular Game of Thrones property, it wasn’t until recently that some kind of confirmation was made. Specifically, a listing over at Target’s website revealed that a game might be coming out. It has since been removed but this has sparked hopes that a full RPG experience involving the world of G.R.R. Martin’s work might finally come soon.
As Forbes reports, there have been video games in the market that are based on or take inspiration from GOT. One is Telltale’s own attempt at crafting a workable story that was bogged down by the pressure to remain relevant in the HBO show’s own plot. Unfortunately, it didn’t really scratch that itch that a lot of other gamers felt.
With the leaked listing on Target’s website, fans might finally get an actual RPG-style game set in Westeros. Users over at NeoGAF were the first to notice the listing. It was mostly blank and the only words posted were Bethesda: Game of Thrones.”
Now, before anyone starts jumping hysterically in excitement, it’s worth pointing out that nothing has been confirmed. The only thing that the listing does is make the possibility of a Bethesda-made GOT video game much closer to reality.
What’s more, there’s no telling what kind of game it’s going to be. Then again, Bethesda is known for making high-quality RPGs, so that’s a safe bet to make.
There’s also the matter of timeline for the game to come out. 2017 is full of Bethesda’s upcoming titles, Cinemablend points out, including Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus and The Evil Within 2. At best, the game could come out in 2018. At worst, it could launch beyond that, which would mean that the show has already ended by then.
