In a striking critique, renowned pollster Nate Silver has called for President Joe Biden to resign immediately, suggesting that Vice President Kamala Harris should assume the presidency for the remainder of his term. Silver's remarks, made on November 20, 2024, underscore concerns about Biden's age and cognitive abilities.
"Is there any particular reason to assume Biden is competent to be president right now?" Silver questioned on social media. "It's a very difficult job. It's a dangerous world. Extremely high-stakes decisions in Ukraine. He should resign and let Harris serve out the last 2 months."
Silver's comments follow President Biden's recent six-day foreign trip to Peru and Brazil for the G-20 summit, during which he had minimal interaction with the press. This lack of engagement has fueled speculation about his capacity to fulfill presidential duties effectively.
The suggestion that Biden step down has ignited a fervent debate among political analysts and the public. Supporters argue that a transition to Harris could provide a fresh perspective and renewed energy in the administration's final months. Critics, however, contend that such a move could create instability and undermine the democratic process.
On social media, reactions have been polarized. Twitter user @PatriotGuardians expressed support, stating, "Finally, someone says what we've all been thinking. #TimeForChange." Conversely, @JusticeForAll tweeted, "This is a dangerous precedent. The voters elected Biden, not Harris. #RespectTheVote."
This is not the first time Silver has voiced concerns about Biden's leadership. Earlier in the year, he described Biden as a "below-replacement-level candidate" and predicted a Democratic defeat, which materialized when Biden lost confidence among key Democrats and eventually withdrew from the presidential race, endorsing Harris.
As the administration approaches its final weeks, the discourse surrounding Biden's capacity to lead is likely to intensify. The potential implications of a presidential resignation at this juncture are complex, encompassing constitutional considerations, political ramifications, and the nation's stability.
The White House has not issued an official response to Silver's remarks. As the situation develops, the administration's actions will be closely scrutinized by both supporters and detractors.
