One person was killed and eight wounded after gunfire broke out near Legion Field following Birmingham’s Magic City Classic on Oct. 31, with police reporting nine victims in total.

Police said the shooting began shortly after 8:50 p.m. ET (7:50 p.m. CDT) in the 400 block of Graymont Avenue West. One victim was in critical condition, while seven others were stable, police said.

Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett said the shooting happened after the game and mostly outside the stadium property.

Police said they detained one person and brought them to headquarters for questioning. Officers also found several firearms, the department said. Police halted tailgating, directed people to leave the stadium grounds and asked the public to send in video of the incident.

Alabama A&M defeated Alabama State 31-28 in the 85th meeting between the universities. Police had not said what prompted the shooting or publicly identified the person detained. The department’s request for video was its next stated investigative step.
