BitTorrent To Take On TV Media With Former CNN And Al Jazeera Figures

In another example of the internet taking over traditional media, BitTorrent will be launching a live-streaming news network, which it will show with the TV production studio that it also launched. The news aspect is meant to disrupt traditional media outlets, and will cater to an audience that is sick of all the rhetoric involving the presidential race.

The news network that BitTorrent is planning on launching will exploit the gaps that have been left by bigger TV news outlets, according to PC Mag. This is how the company plans on attracting viewers, particularly those who feel marginalized and who believe that they are not getting the sort of news that they should, according to BitTorrent media Vice President Erik Schwartz.

"Television news has been stagnating for some time," Schwartz. "It's having trouble appealing to a generation that grew up online. We're building BitTorrent News to solve that problem. We are using superior data and tools and the Silicon Valley ethos of lean start-up to build a nimble news organization that will learn quickly from user behavior."

To help the company with this, they will be getting help from former CNN and Al Jazeera personnel, such as former CNN producer Harrison Bohrman and even a political science professor in Doc Stodden. The news coverage will start on July 18, during the Republican National Convention, and the live streaming will be available for Apple TV and OS X.

Right now, the news that the platform will be covering will focus on politics, but this won’t be the case for long, according to MacWorld. BitTorrent news will supposedly cover other areas, even getting in contact with athletes to share their stories with viewers.

Tests for the news coverage platform by the site actually started back in February. By partnering with OTT News, BitTorrent was able to stream coverage of the New Hampshire primary.
