SAN DIEGO, May 04, 2018 -- Helping Disorders completes new page on borderline personality disorder. The new page outlines some of the treatment, causes and symptoms related to this mental health issue. About 2% of adults are suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) – a severe mental disorder marked by pervasive instability in behavior, moods, and relationships, which disrupts family and work life. It also affects the sense of identity of the person. Furthermore, the disorder can manifest in high rates of suicidal behavior and self-injury.

Individuals with BPD may experience episodes of anger, anxiety, and depression that can last from several hours to days. They may display uncertainty regarding how they view their role in the world and the way they see themselves. Those suffering from this disorder may also view things in extremes, like all bad or all good. It is more common in women, with almost seventy-five percent of the diagnosed with the disorder being women.
Through the exact cause of Borderline Personality Disorder is still unknown, it is said to be the result of a mixture of social stressors and biological predispositions, as well as ways of understanding the world. Biologically, those with BPD are more likely to exhibit abnormalities in the size and functioning of the amygdala, hippocampus size and in the working of their frontal lobes, which refer to the brain areas responsible for integrating emotions with thoughts and regulating emotions.
According to some research, persons with the disorder have less and more active brain areas than those who do not have the illness. However, other research contradicts such claim. Some researchers believe that BPD comes from a combination of individual susceptibility to stress from the environment and various situations that trigger its onset.
Borderline Personality Disorder manifests in different ways, but mental health professionals group them into different categories. To be able to obtain a proper diagnosis, a patient must exhibit at least five of the signs. These include fear of desertion, self-destructive and impulsive behaviors, unstable relationships, unclear or unstable self-image, self-harm, intense emotional swings, explosive anger, persistent feelings of emptiness, and feeling of out of touch with reality or distrustful.
The BPD has been perceived as a condition that is hard to treat. However, thanks to innovative, evidence-based treatment available today, many patients experience fewer or less symptoms and an improved quality of life. Proper treatment by a trained and skilled doctor or therapist is vital to alleviate symptoms. Those who suspect to have Borderline Personality Disorder should seek expert help or if one realizes that a loved one or a family member is suffering from the illness.
