Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he hopes Democrats’ midterm victory will bring more U.S. aid to Kyiv, arguing stronger congressional backing could influence Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In an interview with German broadcaster ZDF, Zelenskyy said he appreciated Republicans’ support but regarded Democrats as clearer in their backing for Ukraine and aid to Kyiv. He also pointed to their calls for renewed ties between the United States and Europe.
“If Congress now speaks of strong financial support or military assistance, as Europe is doing and demonstrating today, then that will be something positive that will have an impact on Putin,” Zelenskyy said.
Anadolu Ajansı reported that Democrats won majorities in the Senate and House of Representatives in Tuesday’s midterm elections. The agency said an excerpt from Zelenskyy’s interview was released Wednesday.
EconoTimes previously covered the Associated Press projection of Democratic control in both chambers.
