Control of the U.S. Senate may turn in part on Maine's race, where CBS News reported that Democratic nominee Troy Jackson is ahead of Republican Sen. Susan Collins in a new poll.

CBS News described the contest as tight. Its video segment featured CBS News' Weijia Jiang and Billy Kobin, a politics reporter for the Portland Press Herald.

Earlier October polls also showed a close contest, according to EconoTimes' previous review of Maine Senate polling. That review noted that samples and field dates differed, complicating direct comparisons.

The current race follows a polling miss in Collins' 2020 contest. Emerson College's final survey put Democrat Sara Gideon at 48% and Collins at 42%; official U.S. House Clerk results show Collins won by 70,422 votes.

Collins is seeking a sixth Senate term. Maine voters are scheduled to choose between the candidates Nov. 3.
