CBS News projected that University of Iowa law professor Christina Bohannan would defeat Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, a result that would end Miller-Meeks’ tenure in Congress.

Iowa’s official vote counts show how their contest tightened before the Nov. 3 election. Miller-Meeks beat Bohannan by 20,774 votes in 2022, but her margin fell to 799 votes in their 2024 rematch, according to the Iowa Secretary of State’s canvasses.

Miller-Meeks first entered Congress after defeating Rita Hart by six votes in Iowa’s 2nd District in 2020. Bohannan, a former state representative, first challenged her in 2022.

CBS News described a campaign in which Miller-Meeks defended President Donald Trump’s economic policies and Bohannan focused on affordability. The outlet assessed Trump’s tariffs and the war in Iran as drivers of higher fertilizer and diesel costs in Iowa, adding to political pressure on Republicans in the farm state.
