The 140th China Import and Export Fair, known as the Canton Fair, is showcasing recycled-plastic seating and reusable booths as resource-saving measures, while its product announcement gave no impact figures.

The Guangzhou event’s home-products phase, the second of three, runs through Oct. 27. The fair’s final phase is scheduled for Oct. 31 to Nov. 4, according to its official schedule.

Some seating at the fair incorporated plastic recovered from discarded appliances and marine waste, the organizer said. Reclaimed-wood furniture was another example. The fair said modular construction and longer-lasting designs could reduce reliance on virgin materials, but supplied no recycled-content shares, production volumes or measured environmental savings.

The fair described sleep products made with bio-based and low-carbon materials in durable structures. It said manufacturers emphasized repairability, recyclable components and environmental certifications. The announcement named no specific products or certifications.

The organizer said it has worked on greener exhibition operations over the past decade, including shifting from single-use booth structures to reusable modular systems. It said the change reduces construction waste and improves efficiency and safety, but provided no measurements.

The fair’s green-booth criteria call for 100% recovery of construction materials and energy-efficient lighting to account for more than 80% of lighting use.

China’s national standards database lists Guidelines for green exhibition operation (GB/T 42496-2023) as current. The standard took effect March 17, 2023. The fair’s next phase is scheduled for Oct. 31 to Nov. 4.
