Canton Network is strengthening its position in institutional blockchain finance, aiming to become a leading infrastructure provider for traditional financial markets. While Polygon has established itself as a major hub for corporate activity in public Web3, Canton is pursuing a different strategy by offering privacy-focused blockchain infrastructure for tokenized assets and financial transactions.
The network recently supported an over-the-counter (OTC) total return swap between trading firm DRW and financial services group Marex through the Derivnex platform. The transaction marked the first use of a fully tokenized index in this type of derivatives trade.
The agreement referenced the iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index, with market data distributed across Canton Network by Kaiko. By using blockchain technology, the participants managed the derivatives contract through a shared digital interface aligned with International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA) standards.
This approach reduced the need for manual data reconciliation and allowed both counterparties to access a synchronized transaction record. Future developments could enable direct cash settlements and collateral management on Canton Network.
DRW founder and CEO Don Wilson emphasized that uncleared OTC derivatives involve complex, customized processes. He said executing transactions through Derivnex on Canton allows financial institutions to work from the same immutable record, improving operational efficiency.
Meanwhile, Ripple has expanded its institutional custody capabilities by integrating Canton Network support into Ripple Custody version 1.43, released on October 5.
The integration enables financial institutions to custody and transfer Canton Coin (CC) and CIP-56 digital assets through Ripple's infrastructure. Its bring-your-own-validator model allows customers to retain control of signing keys within their own secure vaults.
However, the partnership does not mean Canton Network has joined the Ripple ecosystem. Canton operates independently and does not rely on XRP, the XRP Ledger (XRPL), or Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin for transaction settlements.
The development has also sparked debate within the cryptocurrency community. Some decentralization advocates have questioned Canton's permissioned blockchain structure, arguing that its restricted architecture differs significantly from public networks.
Despite the criticism, Canton Network continues gaining traction as blockchain infrastructure for Wall Street institutions. Ripple's custody integration further strengthens access to the network, highlighting growing institutional demand for tokenized financial assets, streamlined derivatives trading, and blockchain-based capital market solutions.
