‘Captain Marvel’ Cast, Updates: Brie Larson Believes Female Superhero a “Symbol” for Women, Pushes for More Female Diversity in Film

‘Captain Marvel’ actress Brie Larson expressed her enthusiasm over her new role in the MCU as the iconic super heroine Carol Danvers. She believed that the character is a “symbol” for women. She also pushed for more female diversity in film during a recent interview.

According to Cinema Blend, Larson was asked what excited her most about taking on the role of one of Marvel’s most iconic female superheroes during an interview with Space Channel. She explained that the opportunity to give young women another great role model on the big screen was one of her driving forces.

She said, “...Like, on social media, I get sent a lot of pictures of young girls wearing the Captain Marvel costume, and I'm excited to see more of that. She's such a great symbol for young girls, and I'm realizing what a deficit we have, that we don't have more of those. I think it's really cool to see a girl in a Batman costume or Spider-Man costume, but I'm really excited that there's a symbol for women. I think that that's really important.”

Larson is set to play Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) first female-led film intended as the ninth installment of Phase Three. She was confirmed for the title role during an announcement made during the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, 2016.

The 26-year old Academy Award-winning actress first began her acting career with brief roles in films such as ’13 Going on 30’ and ‘Sleepover’. She went on to star in films such as ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’, ’21 Jump Street’, and ‘The Spectacular Now’.

She gained critical acclaim for her role in the Canadian-Irish independent film ‘Room’, where she received multiple accolades including an Academy Award for Best Actress. She is set to star in Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ action-adventure and monster film ‘Kong: Skull Island’ scheduled for release on March 2017.

According to CTV News, Larson was vocal about wanting to see more diverse female roles on the big screen. She said during an interview while promoting her film ‘Free Fire’, "It's really important to me that we start to see different colours of women in film, we start to see different body shapes ... we see people from different backgrounds."

She continued, "I think being an artist is a privilege and we need to expand upon what that privilege really is. So for me, I'm stuck in this body that I have but what I want to do with it is at least show that you can be all types of people… We're all different kinds of women. We don't have to just be one."

‘Captain Marvel’ is a planned action-adventure and fantasy film intended as part of the MCU’s Phase Three. It is produced by Marvel Studios and distributed in the U.S. by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is scheduled to premiere in theaters on March 8, 2019.
