“Chicago Fire” season 7’s premiere showed someone returning but it was only to provide closure. Monica Raymund’s appearance as Gabriela Dawson in the season’s pilot surprised the viewers but executive producer Derek Haas explained that it was needed in the story to tie a loose end.
Haas relayed that getting Monica to return to “Chicago Fire” season 7, even for a brief appearance, was not really easy because he even had to beg a bit.
“I basically begged Monica to come back for one episode. I wasn’t crazy about the way we ended last season,” Derek Haas told TV Line. “This summer, I saw her a couple times, and I really, basically, said, ‘Please, please, please, please, will you do it?’ and I think she took pity on me.”
It can be recalled that she did not renew her contract earlier this year and announced that she was leaving the show. When the cast and crew went back to work in July, that was the first time that “Chicago PD” was filming without the actress.
Now, she was seen in the “Chicago Fire” season 7 pilot episode, titled “A Closer Eye,” and the story showed how Dawson said goodbye. In the ending, Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) arrived home and was shocked to see Dawson in their living room where she was packing up.
Apparently, her stay in Puerto Rico has been extended after accepting a permanent post. She asked Matt to join her by saying, “You can come with me. We could go together,” but he subtly refused by saying that he is a “Chicago guy.”
The couple hugged for the last time and she walked away. Matt said that he is proud of her and that she was meant to do it. The ending was a smooth way to let Monica Raymund go and this means that she and her husband just parted ways and it could be for good.
One Chicago Crossover
“Chicago Fire” season 7 episode 2, titled “Going to War,” is part of the crossover among the “Chicago” programs and it will show Firehouse 51 trying to control a big fire that is eating up a 15-story apartment. Many people are still trapped inside and Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) learns that his father is one of those people who are still inside the building, as per TV Guide.
Jay tries to go in to look for his father but Boden (Eamonn Walker) stops him because it is risky and he will not allow any police officer to get killed on the site. It is yet to be seen in “Chicago Fire” season 7 episode 2 if the firefighters are able to save Jay and Will’s dad.
Commenting on the crossover event, actor Jesse Spencer told Newsweek, "We've been looking to do a big apartment fire for a long time, so we're finally able to bring it out."
He added, "It's such a great intro into the three-way crossover because there are people who live in the apartment building who are relatives of other people in the other shows, so it becomes not just a professional mission, but a personal mission to save them as well."
“Chicago Fire” season 7 airs every Wednesday at 9 p.m. on NBC, with the crossover episode airing on Oct. 3.
