China Eastern Orders 25 Airbus A330neo Jets in $9.35 Billion Deal to Boost International Expansion

China Eastern Orders 25 Airbus A330neo Jets in $9.35 Billion Deal to Boost International Expansion.

China Eastern Airlines has signed an agreement to purchase 25 Airbus A330neo widebody aircraft in a deal valued at approximately $9.35 billion at catalogue prices, reinforcing the carrier’s long-term strategy to expand its international network and strengthen Shanghai’s position as a global aviation hub.

According to a filing with the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the aircraft will be delivered in phases between 2029 and 2033. The purchase agreement was signed in Shanghai on Friday. While the official list price is based on Airbus’ January 2025 catalogue pricing, China Eastern stated that the actual transaction value will be significantly lower after negotiating discounts more favorable than those secured in previous aircraft purchases. Such price reductions are common for large commercial aircraft orders.

The airline plans to deploy the new Airbus A330neo fleet primarily from Shanghai Pudong International Airport, increasing the number of long-haul international destinations while adding more flight frequencies on existing routes. The investment aligns with China Eastern’s broader strategy of expanding global connectivity as international travel demand continues to recover.

The latest order follows another major agreement signed in March, when China Eastern committed to purchasing 101 Airbus A320neo aircraft with a catalogue value of approximately $15.8 billion. Together, the purchases highlight the airline’s renewed focus on fleet modernization and international growth.

Airbus has been steadily increasing its presence in China, the world’s second-largest aviation market, where the manufacturer forecasts annual passenger traffic growth of roughly 5% over the next 20 years. Reuters previously reported that Airbus has held intermittent discussions over a potential mega-order of up to 500 aircraft from Chinese buyers, although no agreement was announced during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to China last December.

The Airbus A330neo is the latest generation of the popular A330 family, offering improved fuel efficiency, enhanced aerodynamics, high-aspect-ratio wings, and Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines. These upgrades help airlines reduce operating costs while improving long-haul performance.

China Eastern also confirmed that at least 10 older-generation A330 aircraft are expected to retire during the delivery period due to age, meaning part of the new order will replace aging jets while the remainder will support network expansion.

To finance the acquisition, the airline will use a combination of internal funds, bank financing, bond issuances, and other funding sources. China Eastern said the staggered payment schedule is designed to minimize any material impact on the company's cash flow and day-to-day operations.

In a separate regulatory filing, the airline also disclosed plans for one of its offshore subsidiaries to issue overseas bonds worth up to 2.8 billion yuan (approximately $411.9 million), although it did not specify how the proceeds will be used.

The latest Airbus order underscores China Eastern’s confidence in the long-term recovery of international air travel while strengthening its competitive position in the rapidly growing global aviation market.
