As one of the most epic and legendary JRPGs of all time, Chrono Trigger has become a classic video game that anyone who calls themselves a true video game enthusiast should at least be aware of. Released in the early days of home gaming consoles, the title has since been adapted multiple times, and it recently made a surprise appearance on Steam. That’s right, Chrono Trigger is now on PC.
With the slew of PC ports of classic games going on recently, it really isn’t a surprise that such a classic game from Square Enix, then Square Soft would make an appearance. However, what’s really surprising about this development is that there were no hints it was going to happen. It just showed up on Valve’s digital distribution platform out of the blue, taking gamers completely by surprise, The Verge reports.
According to the game’s Steam page description, this is the definitive version of the classic game. This supposedly means that the graphics have been updated and the music has been remade.
“While keeping the atmosphere of the original, the graphics have been updated in higher resolution. As for the sound and music, under the supervision of composer Yasunori Mitsuda, all songs have been updated for an even more immersive gameplay experience,” the description reads.
Unfortunately, it would seem that not everyone is happy with the port. Reviews on the page have placed it on the Mostly Negative territory, with many gamers taking issue with the graphics and the possibility that this was simply a port from its mobile version.
There’s no doubt that rabid fans of the Chrono franchise will still love the game, no matter what. Unfortunately, players with more modern needs such as the ability to change the graphics settings to their liking probably won’t be too thrilled with this version.
