In either an attempt to cash in on nostalgia among adult gamers or to genuinely bring critically acclaimed video games to the modern era, Disney teamed up with the digital video game retailer GOG.com to release three highly-praised 16-bit titles from the 90s. Now, players can relive their fondest childhood memories by diving into “Aladdin,” “The Jungle Book,” and “The Lion King.”
All three games are not simple ports, Polygon notes. Instead, each title has been updated specifically to be optimized for use in PC and Mac platforms, as well as to prevent issues like framerate slowdowns and awkward controls, among others. The games will still feature their 4:10 aspect ratio, as they were in classic consoles, and the extra space will be plastered with artwork related to the games.
For those who are wondering, “Aladdin” is based on the original “Sega Genesis” version and not the “Super NES” one. This means that players will be avoiding attacks involving scimitars as opposed to the kid-friendly version.
As for “The Jungle Book” and “The Lion King,” it isn’t clear which version was chosen for the source material. The original console to host the former was the “Sega Master System” while the latter debuted on “Genesis” and “Super NES.”
All three games were released between 1993 and 1994, and have been considered iconic titles ever since, Tech Times notes. Not only are they considered some of the best examples of platform video games during their time, their graphical qualities were also highly praised for their innovation.
In an effort to preserve the spirit of these video games as much as possible, everything from the graphics to the soundtracks and gameplay remain the same as their classic versions. Each game will cost players $9.99 or they could get the bundle for $19.99.
