Building a Real-Time Feedback Loop for Education
David Mellor, VP and chief architect at Curriculum Associates
11:20am–12:00pm Wednesday, September 27, 2017
Location: 1A 04/05
Incorporating Apache Kafka as a high-speed event technology, in conjunction with a real-time data warehouse such as MemSQL, Curriculum Associates computes on-the-fly data events for timely insights and removes the need for costly pre-computation workflows.
In his session, David will detail how his team architected a combination of data workflows for actively updating data, such as student activity through online lessons and diagnostics. One workflow relies on in-memory processing to serve responses in under 200 milliseconds. The other workflow focuses on data that can be processed on scheduled intervals.
Using database functions such as CREATE VIEW, Curriculum Associates enables analytics across both real-time and historical data, a critical capability for contextual insights.
Ultimately teachers benefit from the real-time feedback as they can now see how their students are progressing. Providing real-time analytics allows teachers to track progress as it happens and react in a timely fashion.
