In a bid to have a cleaner image, Darkcoin has rebranded itself as Dash, to get rid of the "dark side". Digital currencies, particularly bitcoin, have gained popularity in recent times as a tool for illicit transactions over the internet. Darkcoin, which wants to improve upon bitcoin's anonymity, has until now drawn a greater alliance with illegitimate transactions and the dark web.
The coin has been accepted as a payment method on various dark web drug websites. Now the company is focussing on its technology and features such as Darksend and InstantX, and drawing less attention to its darker features. It is rebranding itself as "a private and instant payment platform"-"digital cash", abbreviated as "Dash". The announcement said:
"Our vision has always been to create a private and instant payment platform (e.g Digital Cash), for the benefit of the majority. This is our ethos and most important goal. Recently it became apparent that the Darkcoin branding was getting in our way, so in order to accomplish our greater mission, we decided rebranding was necessary."
