Many gamers might not know this, but the very first Dark Souls game wasn’t technically Dark Souls, but Demon’s Souls. Also made by From Software, the game that started the “Git Gud” trend has been made available on the PC via the emulator RPCS3 for years now. Thanks to recent upgrades to the emulator, the game can now be played at 4K resolution and at 30FPS.
While it is a popular means of playing PS3 games on PC, the emulator has not exactly been that great at maintaining smooth performance when it comes to Demon’s Souls. Based on the video that was recently released showcasing the improvements, however, it’s clear that the people working on the platform have done a remarkable job at giving it a boost.
By allowing PC players to die over and over again in 4K and at 30FPS, the emulated version of the game might actually be better compared to the PS3 version. The performance of the title in last generation’s Sony console was a bit spotty before From Software refined their process in Dark Souls onwards.
"You might notice the occasional badly paced frame or so, but compared to the 20 fps mess for example Boletarian Palace was at before this is just amazing," the video description reads. "And it's not like a real PS3 is any better in this regard."
As PC Gamer notes, Demon’s Soul is considered every bit as difficult, or at times even more difficult than any installments in the Dark Souls franchise. With it being an older title, its age is beginning to show, but the fights are still thrilling and the boss battles are still controller-smashingly hard.
Anyone who is a fan of the series and wants to check out the original if they haven’t before can get the emulator for PC now. With the graphical improvements, PC players might actually not mind that much now.
