It has been months since Sony announced it is partnering with Discord to add more social features to the PlayStation consoles. At the time, it was not clear what new features would be introduced. But that changed this week after Discord announced its services’ integration on the PS consoles has started to roll out.
The Discord integration on PS consoles was first announced by Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan in May 2021. “Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year,” Ryan wrote in a blog post. “To bring these experiences to life for our players, Sony Interactive Entertainment has made a minority investment as part of Discord’s Series H round.”
Sony and Discord delivered as promised. The latter announced on Monday that the option for PlayStation Network users to share their status and game activities on Discord is now “gradually rolling out.”
PSN users can check if the Discord integration is already available to them by opening their Discord account on mobile, web browser, or desktop. Proceed to User Settings > Connections, the PlayStation icon should appear on the array of services that can be linked to Discord if the new features are already available. However, Discord said the integration is initially released in the United States this week.
Upon clicking the PS icon, users will be asked to enter their PSN login credentials in a pop-up window. Once both accounts are connected, PS players will find new options displayed, including “Display on Profile” and “Display PlayStation Network as your status.”
With the new integration options, PS4 and PS5 players will be able to display their PSN ID on their Discord profile. While playing games on their consoles, their game’s title will also be displayed on Discord. This way, their Discord friends can easily find if they are playing the same games and can easily add them on PSN.
“Whether you stick to single-player games or enjoy having your friends join in on multiplayer endeavors, your friends from all over the world will be able to see all sorts of PlayStation games you’re playing and start a conversation about wanting to jump in and play with you,” Discord said. The company noted, though, that console players will have to enable sharing their status on Discord on the PSN Privacy Settings.
