Donald Trump and the rest of the Democrats have yet to find middle ground amidst the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. And the way everything is shaping up, the impasse could last much longer.
The recent issue surrounding both parties, at the moment, revolves around Donald Trump and his State of the Union address. Nancy Pelosi has now rejected the POTUS to deliver the speech on House floor after weeks of bickering back and forth, CNN reported.
This sort of issue is unprecedented in the history of the United States. The POTUS delivering the State of the Union address in the House floor has been a tradition since George Washington’s era. With the rejection, Donald Trump and his camp are now looking to find new locations to deliver the speech.
CNN’s Chris Cillizza offered four possible locations where this could take place, with the border being the most interesting choice. Meanwhile, the power struggle is affecting some 800,000 federal employees who are forced to take a leave of absence or work without pay. And, with Donald Trump at a deadlock with the rest of the Democrats, it seems that these employees will have to suck it up.
As for the overarching scheme of things, the government shutdown could provide heavy negativity to Donald Trump’s campaign in 2020. However, MSNBC analyst Christina M. Greer warned that, if Trump does lose the 2020 election, there’s a possibility that he’ll refuse to acknowledge the result, RawStory reported.
“We have another presidential election coming up in 2020. And if the — if the votes don’t go Donald Trump’s way, he can say it’s fake news and he doesn’t want to leave,” Greer said. This sort of stubbornness does have precedence as the POTUS is still pushing his desire to build a wall at the border. This desire is the very reason for the shutdown, which many have deemed as completely unnecessary.
