A new plan of Donald Trump involving a nuclear deal with Russia and China has a lot of people worried that it might spark an arms race. The reason behind this drastic plan is the supposed desire of the POTUS to bring together all nuclear weapons, control them, and ultimately eliminate them, CNN reported.
There are several problems with Donald Trump’s proposal. First, he has only two years left for his term. A new nuclear deal involving Russia and China will undoubtedly take a long time to come into fruition, as has been evident with the current New START treaty that took decades before it was signed.
If Donald Trump really wants to pursue this deal, he’ll need to win the 2021 U.S. election. That is quite the tall order for the current POTUS, especially since Joe Biden has entered the presidential race. Another problem for Trump is China and its supposed unwillingness to enter such a nuclear treaty.
The country’s nuclear-capabilities pales in comparison compared to the U.S. and Russia, with an estimate of less than one-tenth in disparity compare to the two. It’s highly unlikely that China will enter Donald Trump’s proposed deal where they’re going to be the underdog, which brings in two possible scenarios as pointed by experts.
One, the U.S. and Russia could decrease their nuclear weapons to match that of China. Or two, allow China to catch up with both countries’ nuclear arsenals. Either way, the two options aren’t palatable for the two superpowers. The White House is reportedly coordinating with other agencies to provide Donald Trump with other options on how to pursue this endeavor. As for the POTUS’ opinion of Joe Biden’s recent announcement, he has this to say.
“Welcome to the race Sleepy Joe. I only hope you have the intelligence, long in doubt, to wage a successful primary campaign. It will be nasty - you will be dealing with people who truly have some very sick & demented ideas. But if you make it, I will see you at the Starting Gate!” Donald Trump tweeted.
