CLEARWATER, Fla., March 02, 2016 -- On Saturday the 27th of February, Clearwater Vice Mayor Jay Polglaze delivered a kick off speech in Osceola Park, corner of Drew and Fort Harrison to 117 downtown Clearwater residents, merchants and organizations and well-wishers for the first cleanup of downtown Clearwater. Participants included members of the Church of Scientology, Downtown Neighborhood Association, Consumer Energy Solutions, students from Clearwater Academy, Washburn Academy, Delphi and even as far away as Florida State University. Keep Pinellas Beautiful and the Church of Scientology supplied brooms, gloves, garbage bags, garbage pickers, lawn mowers and more.
Contractors Bob Kenne and Pierre Cournoyer as well as Gail Lister and Joe Creek divided up the volunteers to tackle the downtown core - 400 and 500 blocks of Cleveland Street and 100 block of North Fort Harrison. All joined in dusting, sweeping, washing windows, mowing grass, pulling dead branches and collecting garbage. At the end of the 3 hour cleaning over 100 bags of garbage were collected.
The twelve students from a fraternity of Florida State University were required to do a community service outside Tallahassee and chose Clearwater. They won the first prize of a basket from Bob and Daughter’s market on Cleveland Street. Staff from Consumer Energy Solutions came in second with $100 gift certificate from Gala’s Gelateria.
Lynn Posyton from the Drug Free World office of Consumer Energy Solutions said, “What a great turnout for our huge cleanup of the Downtown Clearwater business district! We got SO much done in three hours!”
“Our founder, L. Ron Hubbard, emphasized the importance of safeguarding and improving the environment,” stated Lisa Mansell, Public Affairs Director for the Church of Scientology. “We are excited to have been part of this community activity in creating an even more beautiful downtown Clearwater.”
