Dubai-based telecom company ‘Du’ has collaborated with Dubai’s Global Blockchain Council (GBC) to test blockchain technology and its applications in identity and authentification systems.
Both the firms are experimenting and researching together on blockchain technology and its applications in real-time use cases. Du intends to use the technology to find solutions that bring transparency and legalization of information.
According to themerkle.com, Du’s pilot project which is using the blockchain technology on healthcare record transfer will introduce a safer general system that instantly shares and verifies electronic health records between hospitals and clinics. Du plans to replace the usual manual process of recording health records with a solution which will transfer and authenticate patient records.
Talking to coindesk.com, José Valles, Du’s vice president of enterprise commerce said, “The number of opportunities is infinity. Blockchain is an underlying layer that can be used for a lot of things, wherever there is a transaction.”
Valles also mentioned that Du’s research on healthcare solution is a response to illegal medical record tampering which is one of the major concerns of the government.
Apart from Du, there have been many other announcements by companies which have adopted blockchain technology in the healthcare industry like Philip’s healthcare which officially launched the Philips Blockchain Lab in March this year. The lab will explore potential use cases using the innovative cryptographic technology. Also last month, U.S. Congress House Committee suggested that blockchain technology has the potential to make the market for health insurance.
During Keynote 2016 conference last week at Burj Al Arab in Dubai, the Global Blockchain Council (GBC) unveiled seven new pilot projects that use blockchain technology. Global Blockchain Council members include financial institutions, startups and regulatory bodies among more than 40 member bodies.
Du is a telecom operator in the United Arab Emirates. Du’s official name is Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (EITC). It was commercially branded as Du in February 2007. So far more than 6.5 million mobile customers, 555,000 fixed line subscribers, 180,000 home services subscribers and over 70,000 businesses have chosen to use Du services.
