“Electronic Arts” has a rather unsavory reputation among hardcore gamers who take issue with the company’s tendency to get over-involved with developing games, placing more importance on profit than creating good games and other supposed slights to the gaming community. However, with the company’s initiative aimed at supporting creators of original games to make their dreams a reality, “EA” might just be a step closer to healing its relationship with those it has angered.
Called “EA Originals,” the company announced its plans to support indie game developers during E3. Patrick Söderlund, the Executive Vice President of EA Studios, is the one who got up on stage to make the announcement and provide more details on the program.
As covered by Digital Trends, the initiative will involve three central precepts. One is to bring original, beautiful, and innovative titles to the gaming community. Another is to give struggling game developers the chance to launch promising titles. Lastly, all the profits made thanks to the program will go to said developers.
Once Söderlund was done with his speech, Klaus Lyngeled of the Swedish game studio “Zoink” came up treated the crowd to a presentation with a trailer of their indie title “Fe.”
The game features what appears to be a young wolf cub that woke up in the middle of a forest. The trailer showed no verbal conversations. Instead, the viewers were treated to stunning visuals, haunting music, sophisticated gameplay, and the promise of a personal experience.
According to Lyngeled, the game is "a personal narrative about our relationship with nature. It's a story that reminds us that everything in this world is connected."
Kotaku reports that the plans for the initiative were actually revealed a year ago when “EA” supported “Coldwood Interactive” with their phenomenal title, “Unravel.” The game was praised for its unique visuals and its many charming puzzles that connected with reviewers and gamers alike.
