The ENSv2 plan would give each name its own registry for managing subnames, with activation requiring a temporary pause in new .eth registrations if the ENS DAO approves and executes it.
The pause, expected to last a few hours, would affect people seeking new names. Current holders could continue using and renewing theirs. The proposal does not set a deadline for moving existing names to ENSv2.
A yes vote would clear the proposal for a DAO transaction; ENSv2 would activate only after that transaction is executed. Once the proposal is executed, new registrations on ENSv1 would stop. After registrations freeze, ENS Labs would take a fresh ENSv1 snapshot for the final pre-migration sync, reserving newly added names for their current owners. Neither version would accept new registrations during that interval.
The proposal traces the upgrade to limits in the flat registry introduced in 2017. ENSv2 would allow each name to have its own registry for subnames and give owners more detailed control over permissions.
After launch, ENS Labs plans to hand its remaining ENSv2 administrative roles to the DAO timelock. The ENS DAO vote is scheduled to close Sunday, Oct. 25.
