Ever since the Echo Look product by Amazon hit the scene, it has been attracting a lot of negative press over privacy concerns. However, some are arguing that it’s actually the opposite since the new Alexa-powered device will improve privacy security. If so, it would certainly go a long way towards helping Amazon achieve its goal of dominating the fashion industry with its products.
As Computerworld notes, the Echo Look has been lambasted by both the media and users for being a creepy, almost stalker-ish device that could potentially provide the whole world with a window in a private bedroom. However, by speaking to an Amazon spokesperson, the publication makes the case that the opposite is true.
For starters, the company is stressing that it does not allow third-party applications to be installed on the Echo Look. The spokesperson also explains that the device itself is subjected to “rigorous security reviews” and that all of the images it captures are encrypted the moment it is sent by the device until it reaches Amazon’s servers.
Amazon also touts that it does not sell private user information to companies for ad money. This means that for all intents and purposes, the only parties who will get to see the images are the user and Amazon.
As for the matter of improved privacy, Computerworld argues that while it won’t affect those who don’t take pictures of themselves and share it with the world, those who do get more security with the Echo Look than otherwise. Taking selfies with a smartphone and sharing it on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram already yields the kinds of security risks that people are crying about. At least photos taken by Amazon won’t constitute the same dangers.
If Amazon can actually convince the world of this fact, it will be one step closer to becoming a fashion powerhouse. As TechCrunch notes, the Echo Look’s Style Check is basically a fashion feedback service that can help users choose the best outfits for themselves. With the images uploaded to their servers, Amazon can then recommend certain clothing items that would bring out optimal fashion results.
The idea that one can simply take advice from Alexa in order to hit the town in style would have considerable appeal to a lot of people. If so, fashion consultants might start feeling a little hot under the turtleneck at this point.
