Zoox co-founder Jesse Levinson’s critique of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving tech sparked a pointed response from Elon Musk. Levinson questioned Tesla’s approach to autonomous driving safety, suggesting it isn’t equipped for reliable robotaxi operations, fueling a public exchange over the technology’s readiness.
Zoox's Levinson Challenges Tesla’s FSD Timeline
On Wednesday, at the Tech Crunch Disrupt conference, Jesse Levinson, co-founder and chief technology officer of Zoox, cast doubt on Tesla's recent claims that some of their vehicles could have Unsupervised FSD as early as next year, Teslarati reports.
Responding to a question about whether technological or regulatory hurdles were impeding Tesla's robotaxi deployment, Levenson asserted that the business does not "have technology that works" at this time.
Safety Concerns with Tesla’s FSD Tech
Levinson stated, "The more fundamental issue is they don't have technology that works" in reference to Tesla's FSD. "And by works, I want to differentiate between a driver assistance system that drives most of the time — except when it doesn’t, and then you have to take over — versus a system that’s so reliable and robust that you don’t need a person in it."
Even while it can "lull you into this false sense of complacency" before really doing the wrong thing, the CEO emphasized that he doesn't think Tesla's camera-based FSD has enough technology to adequately keep people safe.
More Hardware Needed for Safer Autonomous Driving
The statement continues, "Our perspective is you really do need significantly more hardware than Tesla is putting in their vehicles to build a robotaxi that is not just as safe, but as especially safer than a human," Levinson continues.
Elon Musk’s Response to Zoox’s Critique
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, took exception to that comment and reacted accordingly:
Zoox is a business that specializes in autonomous driving and is currently a subsidiary of Amazon.
