ATLANTA, June 27, 2017 -- A business management major from the University of Connecticut won the 2nd annual Izenda Embedded BI & Analytics Scholarship by using analytics to gain insight into trade options for a Major League Baseball pitcher.
The announcement comes as Izenda opens the call for applications for the 3rd annual Embedded BI & Analytics Scholarship to students enrolled in colleges and universities in the United States.
UConn’s Matthew S. Mocarsky, a rising sophomore and a Connecticut native, plans to minor in statistics to pair with his business management major. He intends to continue working with analytics as part of his career.
“My number one goal is to work in the front office of a major league team,” Mocarsky said.
Why baseball? “It’s really something I love deeply. When I get involved in something I really love, I try to go as deep into it as I can,” he said.
Baseball opened the door to a new way of showing how to track statistics. For the scholarship, he used data visualizations to reveal the best options involving different combinations of multiple players for a baseball trade. He said it’s been a good introduction to statistics for him.
“If it’s something that I’m going to keep learning about, I might as well try to base my career path off of that, whether it’s off of baseball or not,” Mocarsky said.
If baseball isn’t part of his career, he’ll use the skills learned from diving into baseball data and analysis to whatever path his career takes. He picked business management as his major instead of sports management to give himself options.
Mocarsky shares his baseball passion online. Beginning in January 2016, he wrote regular blogs on his own website. Recently he began writing for “The Unbalanced” website, where writers share insights about sports that they back up with analytics.
He believes statistics and analytics are incredible. But that’s not enough – you also need effective communication, he said. He’s using his writing opportunity to improve his communications skills.
Mocarsky also has passion for music, and plays jazz piano at UConn.
“All my family on dad’s side play jazz piano, it’s in the blood. I may not do it professionally the way that they do, but it’s something that I’m passionate about.”
