Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers shot and wounded a man in Patterson, California, on Tuesday after he allegedly attempted to use his car as a weapon against agents during an enforcement operation. ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons confirmed the incident, stating the suspect tried to run over an officer before agents fired in self-defense.
The suspect, identified as an undocumented Salvadoran national with alleged gang ties, was wanted for questioning in connection with a homicide. After being transported to a nearby hospital, the FBI was called to the scene in Patterson, a San Joaquin Valley agricultural community located roughly 90 miles southeast of San Francisco.
Dashcam footage obtained by Sacramento's KCRA television station captured the confrontation. The video shows three ICE officers surrounding a stopped vehicle along a highway when the driver suddenly reversed, colliding with a car behind him, then accelerated forward toward the officers. One agent narrowly escaped by sprinting out of the vehicle's path before the car crossed a highway median into oncoming traffic. Due to the absence of audio, the exact number of shots fired remains unclear.
The shooting comes at a time of intense public scrutiny over immigration enforcement tactics under President Donald Trump's administration. The Department of Homeland Security reported 66 vehicular attacks against ICE officers during the first year of Trump's second term, a dramatic rise from just two recorded incidents the prior year.
However, earlier incidents have raised credibility concerns. Witness accounts and police records from a September shooting in a Chicago suburb, along with additional video footage from the January death of Minneapolis resident Renee Good, both contradicted initial government narratives. These cases have fueled ongoing debate about transparency and accountability in federal immigration enforcement operations across the country.
