Facebook recently released an update for its Messenger app, which now allows users to have a video chat without exiting the chat box entirely on their phones. The video will have a corner on the screen so that users can continue to use text chats while also talking via video.
As Android Police reports, Google already has an app that does pretty much the same thing as what the new update for Messenger can do called “Google Duo.” It allows users to see each other while chatting and also use voice chat if they want. The simplicity of bringing it up is an attractive prospect as well, which might interest some people enough that they would start using it over other options like Skype or WhatsApp.
However, the “Duo” does have certain limitations, including the lack of an audio-only call as well as the much-coveted group or conference call that existing services already offer. This is where the new update for the Messenger can really push the Google app to the sidelines.
With the new live video feature of the Messenger, users can do pretty much all of the things that they could with the “Duo” where they can still chat while seeing each other and the video screen would simply be in the corner. However, since the Messenger can also allow for audio calls and even group messaging, it’s likely that it would present users with far more value.
More than that, the new feature is currently riding high along with the recently implemented Facebook Live, PC Mag reports. The new live streaming feature is incredibly popular among users right now, and the new Messenger feature is benefitting a lot from said popularity. Its biggest difference with Facebook Live, of course, is the fact that only a select few people will be able to view the users via Messenger such as the friend or group that they are talking to.
