Anyone who needs further proof that Facebook is absolutely running people’s lives, users absolutely freaked out when the social network went down briefly on Thursday morning. The shutdown also affected Instagram, which meant that millions of users were deprived of the ability to upload selfies. The problem seems to have been addressed in some areas but persists in others.
As of writing, there has been no official word from Facebook as to what caused the shutdown. The social network blackout affected areas all across the U.S. according to the map provided by Down Detector. However, it seems among the areas that were most affected by the issue included the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and New York, the San Francisco Chronicles reports.
Because users simply needed that social media fix and wanted to complain about not getting it either through Facebook or Instagram, Twitter was the place to go. Many tried to make the hashtag #facebookdown trend, but it didn’t seem to catch on.
As Metro also notes, a lot of the users complaining about the shutdown don’t seem to be doing so out of concern that they couldn’t contact their loved ones or they couldn’t do anything related to work. Aside from trying to jumpstart a meme storm about it being the end of the world because their favorite social network is temporarily not working, many complained that their hard-earned selfies would need to be uploaded at a later time.
According to a spokesperson for Instagram, there was a technical issue that affected its services as well as that of Facebook. Facebook itself seems to be keeping quiet, for now, likely formulating a way to avoid getting bitten by the swarm of social zombies it has created.
“Earlier today, a technical issue caused some people to have trouble connecting to Facebook and Instagram. We resolved this issue for everyone, and we apologize for any inconvenience,” the spokesperson said.
