A memory palace is basically a place in the minds of people with incredibly vivid memory recollection abilities. It presents itself as something different to every person, but it’s basically a structure of some kind where they can browse different memories clearly. Facebook wants to give everybody the same experience via 3D museum.
Facebook recently launched this year’s F8 conference and during the event, the social network provided attendees with a glimpse into its plans for the future, CNET reports. Among them is a virtual mind palace where users can essentially revisit their childhood via 3D images and space.
Users can basically walk through segments of their memories by using virtual reality or some other form of imaging technology, which is close to how those with actual memory palaces often describe the experience.
The technology will apparently involve artificial intelligence, which will take the data that will be used in creating these virtual memory palaces. At this point, however, it’s not easy to see how this would actually look like without experiencing it. With the technology to enable such a thing being far from development, this won’t be possible for quite a while.
As TechCrunch notes, however, the applications for such a technology certainly seem limited right now. Beyond trying to recall certain events in life for really important reasons, most people will probably just view such a thing as a fad.
On the other hand, it could prove useful for things like solving crimes or finding answers to long-standing questions, so it could have applications in other fields. As far as social media, however, it might just be something of a creative proposition to a matter that doesn’t really address any problems.
Even so, if Facebook actually does manage to pull off creating this technology, it would be a wonderful piece of engineering. It can help advance humanity, at least.
