Oculus, the virtual reality hardware company that Facebook owns has been struggling to give its Oculus Rift headset a bigger presence in the mainstream market. A lot of this was due to the price and the hardware limitations, which its new Oculus Go was meant to address. Thanks to first impressions coming in, it would seem that the company is making progress in this regards.
Costing only $199 to the launch price of the Oculus Rift at $599, the Go is definitely the cheaper device. Naturally, there had to be some concessions with regards to the output. As Ars Technica reports, however, it is still an exceedingly spectacular product for how much it costs.
For some context, the Go, as its name suggests, is a wireless VR headset that is meant to provide users with considerably more freedom of movement. The Rift was a troublesome hardware because users kept tripping on the wires, which also functioned as constant reminders of the limitations that come with the product.
With the Go, this particular issue went out the window. As for its performance, most feedback so far has been positive. In fact, some are downright astounded by how much the headset offers despite only costing less than half what the Rift asked for a year ago.
A more detailed look at what the Go can offer, so far, can be found on The Verge, which notes the headset’s more nondescript appearance. There definitely had to be some compromises with the design and the materials used, but this product needs no other hardware to work. The $199 allows for a full VR experience with customers only needing to buy the software.
The specifications are being kept under wraps, for now, and more tests are needed to see just how far the Go can, well, go in terms of quality of experience. From what reviewers have said, however, fans might just have plenty to look forward to.
