State Attorney Jack Campbell said prosecutors would charge 15-year-old Anthony Rivers III as an adult after a shooting near Florida A&M University left 11 people wounded.

A juvenile court ordered Rivers to stay in custody at an Oct. 26 hearing, The New York Times reported. Florida law allows adult prosecution in some juvenile cases.

Officials said Rivers would be charged with 11 counts alleging attempted second-degree murder, plus a count alleging firearm possession by a delinquent. EconoTimes previously reported on Rivers’ arrest and initial charges.

The Tallahassee Police Department said minors accounted for six of the 11 people shot. Officials reported that six people had been hospitalized by Oct. 25, including one in critical condition.

Tallahassee has seen other deadly shootings in recent years. A 2022 gun attack outside a liquor store killed one person and wounded eight; State Attorney Jack Campbell said it was connected to a FAMU homecoming event. A 2025 shooting at Florida State University killed two people and wounded six.

Campbell cited the alleged offense’s severity as a reason to seek adult prosecution. He said prosecutors consider repeat offending when deciding whether to charge a juvenile as an adult, and declined to discuss Rivers’ record.

Lawrence Revell, chief of the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD), said investigators believed the gunfire followed a physical fight between people who knew one another. He said the victims did not appear to be intended targets and that further arrests were possible.
