A 15-year-old was arrested in connection with a shooting that wounded 11 people near Florida A&M University, with police saying investigators believe a dispute among acquaintances preceded the gunfire.
The Tallahassee Police Department identified the suspect as Anthony Rivers III. He faces 11 counts of attempted second-degree murder and a charge of possession of a firearm by a delinquent, the department said. Detectives consulted State Attorney Jack Campbell before the Sunday, Oct. 25, arrest.
Police said 12 people were injured overall: 11 had gunshot wounds, while another person hurt an ankle while fleeing. The shooting occurred at about 8 p.m. EDT Saturday, Oct. 24, near Perry and Manatee streets.
Florida A&M University’s schedule listed its homecoming football game at Bragg Memorial Stadium from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. EDT that day. Police have not said the game was connected to the shooting.
The department said its early findings point to a physical confrontation before the gunfire and a dispute involving people who knew one another. Investigators do not believe the injured people were intended targets.
The inquiry remains open, and police said more arrests are possible. Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said, “While this arrest marks a significant step forward, our work is far from over.” The department said detectives are reviewing evidence and following public tips. The arrest was also covered in EconoTimes’ earlier report on Rivers.
