Floyd Mayweather Sr. was recently knocked out during a spontaneous sparring match between him and Ross Thompson. Thompson is a former boxer and coach who stepped inside the ring with the 66-year-old to settle an argument.
The bout supposedly started when Thompson told Floyd Mayweather Sr. that his brother, Roger Mayweather, is a better coach than him. This got the old boxer heated and fired back at Thompson, taking jabs at the 45-year-old’s uninspiring career, Mirror reported.
What’s more, Floyd Mayweather Sr. said that Thompson will not be able to touch should they exchange blows. That prompted the fight and both men started throwing punches. As can be expected, it started off all calm and slow.
But then Thompson put together a three-punch combination with the last blow clipping Floyd Mayweather Sr. right on the face. The old timer came sprawling down on the canvas and he supposedly stayed there for a good 30 seconds.
To his credit, Floyd Mayweather Sr. took the defeat with stride and shook Thompson’s hands by the end of it. For his part, Thompson explained that he has a history with the older Mayweather and said that trash-talking wasn’t an unusual dialogue exchange between them. Following the brief bout, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was asked what he thought about the match.
The undefeated boxer said that Floyd Mayweather Sr. should stop getting in the ring to box as he’s too old to be doing such a thing. This isn’t the first time that Sr. went in the ring with a much younger fighter. A few years ago, the trainer went against internet troll Charlie Zelenoff.
That match also started with a lot of bad mouthing. At first, Zelenoff tried knocking down Floyd Mayweather Sr. by going all out with a flurry of blows. But given that the old boxer is quite the defensive fighter and Zelenoff being the unremarkable boxer that he is, the troll tried quickly.
This was when Floyd Mayweather Sr. started pushing forward and landing punches. Habitually, Zelenoff stepped out of the ropes after he felt threatened, although he went back in quick and tried to sucker punch Sr. when the old timer turned his back.
This was when things got heated up as an unnamed man rushed to the ring to beat Zelenoff up. Needless to say, the troll got what he deserved and Floyd Mayweather Sr. got a bit of an exercise with the whole thing. But Floyd Mayweather Jr. got it right, his father needs to stop boxing with other fighters as it’s an accident waiting to happen.
