The order of events in the anime adaptation holds a different level of significance in “Food Wars” season 5, especially since many fans are hoping it would offer an original ending. With just two episodes released, three major changes can be spotted in the Fifth Plate from the manga. However, they still do not guarantee an anime-original ending.
Suzuki’s introduction and first interaction with Soma
Despite having just two episodes to watch since “Food Wars” season 5’s premiere in April, anime fans have likely gotten the message that Suzuki is going to the main villain in the final arc. This should have been obvious in his first interaction with Soma during the final exams at the beach -- one of the first anime-original scenes in the Fifth Plate.
While Suzuki did enter Totsuki as a temporary member of the faculty, him taunting Soma at the beach was not the original way he was introduced in the series. However, “Food Wars” season 5 still included his informal shokugeki against Soma, which was canon in the manga.
How Soma joins the BLUE competition
This has to be one of the significant changes between the manga and “Food Wars” season 5. In the original series, Soma was invited to compete in BLUE. The manga showed Joichiro finding the invitation letter at their home, which he then delivered to Soma by the end of the beach exam arc.
It was quite a major tweak because Soma and Joichiro had an important conversation when the latter brought the invitation to his son. Joichiro revealed that it was Sanzaemon Nakiri who told Joichiro to enroll Soma in Totsuki. At this same moment, Joichiro questioned whether Soma’s passion to run their diner would be the right choice for him. Soma insisted on wanting to run the diner and promised his father that he would only do so if he won in BLUE. But “Food Wars” season 5 could still insert this exchange in the upcoming episodes.
Most parts of episode 2 are anime-only scenes
As mentioned, Totsuki’s representatives to BLUE were chosen and received invitations. But this was not the case as “Food Wars” season 5 episode 2 mostly revolved around the BLUE preliminaries that allowed all students to compete for the three slots for BLUE representations. In the anime, Erina was the only one who received a direct invitation.
Meanwhile, it should be noted that while the manner of choosing BLUE contestants from Totsuki was different in “Food Wars” season 5, it did not change who will compete in the prestigious contest. In the end, Soma, Takumi, and Megumi still won the preliminaries.
‘Food Wars’ season 5 restart date
Fans will have another chance to spot the differences between “Food Wars” season 5 and the BLUE arc as it was told in the manga as the Fifth Plate will be restarted in July. The show was postponed in April after airing two episodes due to COVID-19. Episode 1 will air on July 3.
