MIT Media Lab has launched the Digital Currency Initiative which will aim at spreading awareness of the technology on campus and abroad at the same time promoting policy and standards initiatives through research.
The news was first made public in a post by Brian Forde, former White House senior advisor and Digital Currency Initiative director. He has officially joined the university-run research laboratory.
Joi Ito, Media Lab director, who said that an important announcement regarding the future of bitcoin at MIT would be made soon, expressed his interest at the appointment while praising cryptocurrencies for their disruptive potential.
"Brian's experience mainstreaming emerging technologies from the rural mountains of Nicaragua to the White House will be invaluable as he tackles the challenges of digital currency - one of the most promising emerging technologies for the next 10 years", Ito said.
