Frontier Airlines Eyes Spirit Takeover Amid Bankruptcy Discussions
Frontier Airlines is reportedly considering another bid to acquire Spirit Airlines, as Spirit negotiates with debtholders over a potential bankruptcy filing, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
The two budget airlines have engaged in recent talks about a possible acquisition, though no final agreement has been reached. Any potential deal is expected to occur as part of Spirit's ongoing bankruptcy negotiations.
Earlier this week, Spirit extended a deadline to refinance $1.1 billion in debt due by the end of the year, highlighting its financial struggles. The airline's debt challenges have intensified discussions of a takeover.
Frontier and Spirit have had a long-standing history of merger attempts dating back to 2016. A $2.9 billion deal between the two was reached in 2022 but was disrupted by a competing bid from JetBlue Airways. JetBlue ultimately won the bidding war, although the U.S. government blocked the merger over concerns about reduced competition in the airline industry.
Meanwhile, Frontier is dealing with its own challenges, facing a strike involving over 2,000 pilots who are demanding better pay and benefits.
