After years of never-ending rumors and speculations, Rockstar Games surprised fans with the announcement of the "GTA 6" development on Friday. However, well-known video game insiders are suggesting that the game is unlikely to launch anytime soon.
Rockstar addressed "GTA" fans last week to announce the next updates for "GTA V" and "GTA Online." And for the first time, the developer also provided information on the future of the franchise.
While the studio did not go into detail, Rockstar confirmed what countless rumors have claimed -- "GTA 6" is in development. "We are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway," Rockstar said.
"GTA 6" had been the subject of many rumors and alleged leaks way before the announcement last week. A couple of tipsters suggested earlier that the game has been in the works for years, giving the impression that it could be released sooner than anticipated. But a report from video game journalist Jason Schreier in July 2021 noted that "GTA 6" was only in early development at the time, which may have led to speculations on a potential 2023 launch.
However, a subsequent report from leaker Tom Henderson suggested that the game could be released in 2024 or 2025. That information was later corroborated by Schreier and VGC's Andy Robinson.
Following Rockstar's announcement on Friday, Schreier has reiterated the game is more likely to launch in 2024. The journalist said on Twitter, "Wouldn't be shocked to see Grand Theft Auto VI announced later this year with a fake release date of 'fall 2023' that then slips to 2024."
That appears to be a reference to previous Rockstar project delays, like what happened with "Red Dead Redemption 2." The sequel was announced in fall 2016 and was originally scheduled to launch in the second half of 2017. However, Rockstar delayed the game twice, leading to its official release date in October 2018.
The official announcement of "GTA 6" should be welcome news for its fans. But more details about the upcoming game are still to come. Rockstar said it will reveal more information about the next game "as soon as we are ready."
