Many expected the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase to unveil yet another virtual reality game based on a highly popular franchise. That turned out to be “Ghostbusters VR” that has been announced at the event and is slated to launch on the Meta Quest 2.

The virtual showcase, which ran for more than 26 minutes, ended with the “Ghostbusters VR” reveal presented by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The official trailer for the upcoming VR game featured “cinematics rendered in engine” with the note that it does not show actual gameplay. But it was a nice recollection of the well-known ghost-hunting equipment that long-time fans of the franchise have seen from the franchise.

There is not much information revealed yet about “Ghostbusters VR.” But it is confirmed to be in development by nDreams, which is known for its work on other VR titles like “Far Cry VR: Dive Into Insanity” and “Phantom: Cover Ops.” The latter was released in 2020 for then-called Oculus Quest headsets.

What VR fans know for now is that “Ghostbusters VR” will be a co-op game with four players, but the official game descriptions also noted that fans can play it solo. Players will take an “engrossing co-op campaign” set in San Francisco, where players will have to set up their own Ghostbusters headquarters.

While the game is promised to feature “iconic equipment” from the franchise, it is also confirmed to open a new chapter of the “Ghostbusters” universe. “Continue the Ghostbusters’ legacy, protect the city from fiendish ghosts, and experience all the humor and frights from the beloved franchise,” the game’s synopsis reads.

It is worth noting that the nDreams is partnering with Sony Pictures Virtual Reality and the Ghost Corps owned by Columbia Pictures -- a subsidiary of Sony as well. This has led to some questions on why “Ghostbusters VR” was announced for Meta Quest 2 and whether or not Sony will also bring the game to its own PlayStation VR system.

Meta and nDreams said more details on “Ghostbusters VR” will be released in the coming months. But the companies have yet to mention a release window for the game.
