Sebastian Kurz, the foreign minister of Austria said that his country would veto any talks with Turkey with regard to Turkey’s membership with the European Union. And the reason for that is the fact that Turkey doesn’t share the European values, which was clear from the crackdown Ankara pursued after the Military coup in July. So far more than 50,000 people have been questioned, detained or imprisoned over the coup that lasted less than a day. More than 100,000 public sector employees have been laid off, while Ankara is considering bring back death penalties. More than 100 journalists have been arrested while 170 media outlets including newspapers and broadcasters have been shut down.
Last month, the EU froze accession talks with Ankara over alarm following Turkey's crackdown on dissent in the wake of the attempted putsch. In response, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened to throw Turkey's borders open for refugees to enter Europe if EU accession talks were suspended. Under a non-confirmed deal, Turkey is to take back refugees from Greece, in return EU would grant €6 billion to Turkey and allow its citizen to travel visa free in the European Shenzhen zone.
Mr. Kurz said he would vote to block Turkey from having any potential role in the EU in an upcoming gathering of EU member states and welcomed the decision to freeze talks with Turkey with the European Union, "The European Parliament has adopted a courageous and correct resolution demanding that the accession negotiations with Turkey be frozen". He added, "I have always warned not to make us dependent [on Turkey]. We must protect our external borders and be able to decide who is allowed to immigrate to Europe and who is not,"
